It’s very common to see oil stains on concrete driveways and garages. Concrete also expands and contracts according to temperature changes. Over time, these subtle changes may lead to cracking. While cracks do not necessarily affect the integrity of the concrete, they do ruin the visual appeal.

Basic care of concrete surfaces is minimal. Here are a few ways to keep your concrete looking its best:

Clean up spills immediately.

If you spill oil or grease on concrete, you have a small window of time before it absorbs deep below the surface. Mop up any spills as soon as possible to avoid staining.

Keep weight to a minimum.

Concrete is very strong, but it can also crack under pressure. Make sure you don’t put too much weight on a concrete surface. If you need to store heavy machinery, consider covering the concrete with a protective layer first.

Repair cracks as they appear.

Cracking is inevitable. However, if you fill cracks as soon as you notice them, they won’t have the opportunity to spread.

Power wash the surface.

Once stains set, it’s almost impossible to remove them without power washing the surface. Schedule a power wash at least once a year to keep your concrete clean.

Apply a sealant.

Painting a layer of epoxy on top of your concrete is the best way to make it last longer. A sealant will also provide added protection from staining and cracks.
