Fence staining in Reno and Sparks
Nevada sun turns a new cedar fence gray in about a year. Stain slows that down, but only if the wood is cleaned and dry enough to absorb it.
Facts About Staining Fences
Residential fences come in all shapes and sizes. They’re sold in a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and wire. Building a fence around your home is the easiest way to provide your family with more privacy. Fences also deter criminals and keep children and pets safe.
If you decide on a wooden fence, you should also consider staining it. A single coat of stain will prevent discoloration and bring out the natural grain of the wood. Trying to stain a fence on your own, however, is a tedious job. There are so many nooks and crannies, that’s it’s easy to miss a few spots. It’s much easier to sit back while a professional painting company like Battle Born Painting takes care of the job for you.

Why Reno fences turn gray so fast
Unprotected wood starts graying in a few months of Nevada sun. UV breaks down lignin, the natural glue in wood fibers, which leaves a gray, fuzzy surface that absorbs water. Repeated wetting and freezing then causes splitting, cupping, and loose fasteners.
Stain with UV-blocking pigments slows that process. Clear sealers do not do much here, because they have no pigment to block sunlight.
Choosing the right stain
Semi-transparent stains show the grain and offer good UV protection, which makes them our most common recommendation for cedar and redwood fences. Solid stains look more like paint, hide mismatched boards, and last longer, but they hide the wood grain and are harder to switch away from later.
Oil-based penetrating stains soak into dry Reno wood well and fade gradually instead of peeling. Water-based stains dry faster and clean up easier. We pick based on your wood, the previous product, and the look you want.
Fence prep that makes stain last
Stain only lasts if it can soak in. We clean and brighten the wood to remove gray fibers, mildew, and old stain, rinse it, and wait until a moisture meter reads in the right range. We also cover gravel, plants, siding, and neighbor sides as agreed before spraying.
